Keep in mind that a standard pre-2009 home natural gas furnace emits ~1 oz of NOx per day (~2000 sq ft house, ~600 cu. ft of gas per day). The suspect VWs, conservatively assuming worst case of 40x the tier II limits at all times (way worse than it likely actually is), would emit ~0.5 oz per day assuming a standard 20 mile round trip commute. To extend the hyperbole of the folks assigning 'deaths' to VW's...if you haven't replaced your furnace recently you're killing twice as many people as TDi drivers. Food for perspective.

Solution: Move somewhere warm.

Seriously though, you make an important point. Some home heating systems are woefully inefficient. I had a heating unit in a house I used to rent that I think was from the 40's. I spent $400 a month on oil (what a horrible way to heat), with the thermostat set at 64. I can set the thermostat at 85 in my current house with gas heat and it would be cheaper/better for the environment.

Or why not take the opportunity to build some character?

I lived this life as a child...though my mom’s solution was not ‘wear a sweater’ it was ‘Go rake the lawn/split some logs if you’re cold, moving around will warm you up’

My furnace is from 1996. I’ll replace it when it breaks and I can’t get parts for it anymore. I figure that will happen within the next 5-10 years.

I just ordered a standing pilot to intermittent electronic pilot conversion kit for my garage heater, so that should make up for me driving my ‘73 Buick around. I’m sure it’s off the charts on NOx, CO2, CO, whatever you want to measure... it’s shoving lots of it out the tailpipes.
